Fancy Chemutai of Kenya won the BAA 10k Sunday in 30 minutes 36 seconds, breaking the course (and American) record set by Shalane Flanagan in 2016, by 16 seconds.
The race began and ended on Charles Street next to Boston Common and the Public Garden, and meandered through the Back Bay and Allston-Brighton.
“I enjoy being in Boston and enjoyed to win,” Chemutai told the BAA after Boston debut. “It was very hot . . . I was going for the course record, it was in my mind.”
The 24-year-old Chemutai, who is the world’s third-fastest 10k runner, hit the 5-mile mark in 24:41.
“I saw it [the course record] was coming,” Chemutai said.
Kenyans Brillian Kipkoech (31:04) and 2015 Boston Marathon winner Caroline Rotich (31:58) placed second and third.
Kenyan David Bett won the men’s race in 28:08, besting two-time champion Danie Chebii by a second. Stephen Sambu (28:11) placed third.
“I feel very happy,” said Bett. “I feel so happy for winning. I’m looking forward to coming back again next year. I think before I’ll try to run [the] BAA Half Marathon in October.”
The top American finisher in the men’s race was Brighton’s Brian Shrader (seventh. 29:11) and Aliphine Tuliamuk of Flagstaff, Ariz. (eighth, 32:27) was the top American woman.
American Daniel Romanchuk won the men’s wheelchair division in 20:17. The 2019 Boston Marathon men’s wheelchair division champion won easily, besting fellow American Miguel Jimenez-Vergara by an astounding 3:55. Romanchuk ended Tony Nogueira’s streak of five consecutive wins.
“It was a wonderful day,” Romanchuk said. “It’s a unique course as an out and back, and towards the end it kind of felt like the [Boston] Marathon.
“Coming in towards the end, the crowds, just amazing!”
