DANVERS — During a break in his 120-pound semifinal match in Saturday’s Division 2 North touranment, lying on his back, Jack Darling was holding his left elbow in pain.

Two hours later, the Masconomet Regional junior raised that arm in victory after he pulled out a close 5-4 victory over Greater Lowell’s Ronnie Rossetti in the final.

In capturing his third straight D2 North title, Darling pinned his way to the finals, rallying to beat North Andover’s Jamil Nickerson in the second period of that semifinal. Darling then taped up his arm before the final.

“It’s pretty fun,” said Darling, who has compiled a 37-0 record this season.

“Winning my third sectional title in a row means I’m the best in this area and I’ve known that for a little while. I’ve been in this stage before, I’ve won before.”

While a sectional title isn’t anything new to Darling, his weight class is. After winning a title at 106 pounds as a freshman, he jumped to 113 as a sophomore for another championship. This season, he’s at 120.

And he earned his third facing Rossetti for the third time this season.

“This is definitely my most challenging title,” Darling said.

“He’s tough, he’s strong, he’s physical, and I know he’s coming after me. Plus, the elbow isn’t really helping. But, I know I could’ve wrestled better and I’ll be ready to do that next week [at the Division 2 state championship].”

Led by four-time sectional champion Joey Sanchez (145 pounds), Central Catholic (213.5 points) captured its third straight North crown. Burlington (156.5) was second, followed by North Andover (153.5). Sanchez gave up just one point in his quarterfinal, semifinal, and finals’ matches. He beat Greater Lowell’s David McKay in the final, 10-1.

North Andover junior Joey Valentino was named the tourney’s Outstanding Wrestler after defeating Central Catholic’s Tyler Glenn, 8-3, in the 126-pound final.
