Tiger Woods watched his tee ball go in the water at 17.

The diabolical 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass took a bite out of Tiger Woods Friday.

Woods came to the island-green hole at 5 under par in the second round of The Players Championship at Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. He had just birdied No. 16 to pull within two shots of the lead.

In fact, Woods, who started his round on the back nine, had birdied three of his first seven holes of the day.

However, his tee shot on the 146-yard par-3 17th trickled off the back of the green into the water. Hitting his third from the drop area, he went in the water again. After getting on the green with his fifth shot, he two-putted for a quadruple bogey-7.

That big number sent him plummeting down the leaderboard. Woods did come back and make a birdie three holes later, on No. 2, but as of noon Friday, he was tied in 50th place at 2 under, seven shots astern of leader Kevin Kisner, who had it to minus-9 through 13 holes of his second round.
