Remnants of an ancient water transport system

Lehner believes that more than 4,000 years ago the Nile, which is now five miles away, ran closer to the site — and Egyptian engineers saw an opportunity.

DURING NILE RIVER FLOODING (AUGUST TO NOVEMBER)

The Nile is tamer now, but before it was dammed at Aswan, it rose 23 feet from its lowest level in the river channel during flood season. Here’s a reconstruction of the 4th Dynasty Giza waterfront during the flood peak. Floodwaters fill the canals and harbors the Egyptians created to deliver materials and supplies for pyramid building.

DURING LOW WATER (APRIL TO MAY)

During high water, the river’s 23-foot swell would make waterways deep enough for heavy cargo boats with deep drafts. During low water, the waterways would still be deep enough for boats with shallow drafts, according to Lehner’s theory.
