Taking lesson from Watergate, lawyers group speaks out

Thank you to Renée Graham for her column “Watergate feels eerily familiar” (Ideas, May 12). Mindful of Watergate, last fall when Harvard Law School classmates met for their 50th reunion, we created the nonpartisan Lawyers Defending American Democracy. Led by Scott Harshbarger, the two-term attorney general for Massachusetts, we identified the core values and principles of the rule of law violated today. Then we solicited input from lawyers nationwide, and recently sent an open letter to the president and Congress demanding compliance with the rule of law.

To date, more than 500 attorneys have signed the open letter. Among them are former state and federal judges, law school deans and professors, and law firm partners.

We must remember the lessons of Watergate and commit to the principles of American democracy.
