    Moving homeless people along, coldly

    From the article “Bridge spikes hindering homeless criticized” (Metro, Jan. 7): “MassDOT spokesman Patrick Marvin said that the spikes were not installed to discriminate against any one group but rather to keep out ‘trespassers.’ ”

    And this, from the pen of Nobel laureate Anatole France: “The law, in its majestic equality, forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal their bread.”
