Apply the same rules to bicycles and cars

As a bicyclist who biked to work for over 25 years, I got infuriated every time I saw bicyclists run red lights and ignore stop signs. Thus I am amazed that a bicyclist says that there should be separate rules for bikes and cars (“Bicyclist says she didn’t pull over for Arlington police as a bit of a protest,” BostonGlobe.com, Sept. 21). Why shouldn’t bicyclists obey the same rules as those who drive cars? After all they share the road. While drivers obviously need to be educated to become more aware of bicyclists, those who ride bikes should also obey traffic rules. If they did that, there would be fewer accidents and the roads would be safer for everyone.
