President Trump wrote Saturday morning that the airstrikes on Syria late Friday night were “perfectly executed,” completing his tweet with an exclamatory: “Mission Accomplished!”
‘‘It was mission accomplished,” said Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White. The strikes ‘‘were very successful. We met our objectives. We hit the sites.’’
Trump also thanked France and the United Kingdom for their “wisdom and the power of their fine Military.”
“Could not have had a better result,” he wrote.
A perfectly executed strike last night. Thank you to France and the United Kingdom for their wisdom and the power of their fine Military. Could not have had a better result. Mission Accomplished!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 14, 2018
Trump added that he is proud of the US military, “which will soon be, after the spending of billions of fully approved dollars, the finest that our Country has ever had.”
So proud of our great Military which will soon be, after the spending of billions of fully approved dollars, the finest that our Country has ever had. There won?t be anything, or anyone, even close!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 14, 2018
Trump announced Friday night that the United States, France, and Britain had together launched military strikes in Syria to punish President Bashar Assad for using apparent chemical weapons against civilians, and deter him from doing it again.
Assad’s military reportedly used chemical weapons in an attack in Douma last weekend, choking at 49 Syrians to death.
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said there were no reports of US losses and said the targets were chosen with the intention to minimize civilian casualties.
Trump’s “Mission Accomplished” tweet echoes former President George W. Bush’s “Mission Accomplished” speech, given in May 2003, as he claimed victory in Iraq.
“In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed,” Bush said at the time.
Bush’s comments ultimately proved premature, as the worst of the fighting in Iraq was still to come.Felicia Gans can be reached at email@example.com. Follow her on Twitter @FeliciaGans.
