KILLINGTON, Vt. — A Vermont town is considering a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries.

The Rutland Herald reports the ordinance would regulate the establishment and operation of medical marijuana dispensaries within the town of Killington and levy penalties for the use of marijuana in public places.

Town Manager Chet Hagenbarth says he drafted the ordinance after the topic was discussed at a previous Killington Select Board meeting.

A public hearing on the ordinance will be held at the Aug. 20 meeting.

Public hearings aren’t required ahead of passing ordinances, but town officials say it is recommended and has been typical practice.

If adopted, the ordinance wouldn’t go into effect for 60 days. Hagenbarth says anyone opposed to the ordinance could use that time to put together a petition for a town vote.
