Historian Kerima Lewis will talk about African slaves coming to New England from the Caribbean as part of a series of programs hosted in Quincy by the Abigail Adams Historical Society that explore the subject of slavery in early America.
The free talk will be held Feb. 12 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Thomas Crane Public Library’s community meeting room.
Abigail Adams strongly opposed slavery, but grew up in Weymouth in a slave-owning home, according to a news release about the event.
Lewis will discuss the early history of Africans in New England and the possible origin of the family slaves in the household of Abigail Adams’ parents.
Lewis teaches history at Emerson and Quincy colleges. She holds a doctorate in history, a law degree and a master’s degree in social work, and has been a Massachusetts Historical Society Fellow.Johanna Seltz can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org
