With drawbridge fixed, Rockport/Newburyport rail line expected to run smoothly Friday

The Friday morning commute on the Rockport/Newburyport rail line is expected to go smoothly after a mechanical issue on a drawbridge in Saugus was fixed, officials said.

Some trains were canceled and others were delayed by up to 40 minutes Thursday morning after the bridge failed to close around 6:30 a.m., according to Keolis Commuter Services, which operates the commuter rail for the MBTA.

The bridge was returned its horizontal position by 7 a.m., and train service over the bridge resumed, said Justin Thompson, a Keolis spokesman.

No train service will be interrupted Friday as a result of the drawbridge issue, Thompson said.
