Worcester police probe shooting of 22-year-old man

Worcester police are investigating after a 22-year-old man was shot and wounded Wednesday night.

Officers arrived on Chandler Street around 8 p.m. after receiving several calls about youths firing guns at each other. The youths had left the area by the time officers arrived, but the officers were able to interview witnesses, Worcester police said in a statement.

The witnesses told officers two groups were yelling at each other, then fired shots across nearby Jaques Avenue. The youths fled on foot and in vehicles, police said.

About five minutes after the initial call about the gunfire, police received a call about a gunshot victim who had been taken to Saint Vincent Hospital. The man had been shot in the abdomen, but the injury is not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

“It is likely that the 22-year-old was shot on Jaques Avenue, but further investigation is needed to confirm,” police spokesman Sean Murtha said.

The investigation is ongoing. No one has been charged as of midday Thursday. Police are asking that anyone with information reach out to the Worcester Police Department.
