Daniel I was surprisingly nervous. I had heard of butterflies in the stomach, but my butterflies seemed strangely elephant-shaped and violent.

Nina I read as many Cupids as I could find. My mood was antsy. I spent the end of my shift tidying up, since I couldn’t sit still.

Daniel We both arrived 10 minutes early. Nina looked nice; she was wearing a pretty dress with flowers on it.

Nina He looked genuine from the start and proved to be true.

Daniel Nina works for a public health professor. She fences, plays the marimba, and has a very musical family.

Nina I told him each couple seems to have been paired for something they had in common.

Daniel We figured out we had both written about kayaking.

Nina I have spent a few summers working on the Charles, whereas he kayaks occasionally with his family.

Daniel As the night went on we learned we both prefer wine over beer, are both Jewish, and both have a sister (and our sisters have the same name). At the end of the date, when we added each other on Facebook, it turned out that I had gone to summer camp with her cousin.

Nina The lawn games at the Glow party were great to break the ice. We played a few rounds of cornhole with another couple and were beaten badly.

Daniel We got shrimp, rice, a meat sandwich, a grilled cheese, and wine. It was all pretty tasty.

Nina We each got a glass of sauvignon blanc and agreed that we were glad not to have to pretend to like beer to impress the other.

Daniel I cannot point to one moment where fireworks erupted. But I felt comfortable with her. We spent the entire evening sharing funny stories.

Nina Besides kayaking, we didn’t have much in common. He’s a PhD student and doesn’t have time for much other than his research, while I value my hobbies. I was often prompting conversation, which was tiring.

Daniel Nina had plans with her friends at 10, so we parted. We friended each other and decided to keep in touch.

Nina We hugged briefly. It seemed like the reasonable thing to do.

Daniel I would like to, yes. It would be a terrible shame to not go kayaking together.

Nina No. We seemed to be on the same page about this, though, which is always good.
