Flowers, birds, champagne, a Gilded Age mansion — it’s all so civilized.
The 2019 Newport Flower Show kicks off its 24th year on June 21. This year’s theme is Audubon: Artistic Adventures, celebrating prolific ornithologist John James Audubon.
Visit terra-cotta mansion Rosecliff, created for Comstock lode heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs, to gaze upon majestic birds, pink flamingo gardens, and topiary peacocks. Intrigued? Tree and plant experts will offer short pop-up lectures and demonstrations on the front lawn. Lifestyle maven and British aristocrat India Hicks will also lecture and appear at a kickoff gala with cocktails, live music, and a seaside feast.
Also enjoy afternoon tea, a picnic supper followed by a screening of British gardening comedy (a true niche genre) “Greenfingers” on Rosecliff’s rolling lawn, and a Sunday champagne and jazz brunch.
Prices vary depending on event; get tickets at www.newportflowershow.org.
