The Institute of Contemporary Art held its annual gala at the ICA Watershed in East Boston on Friday, raising more than $1.1 million in support of exhibitions, educational programs, performing arts, and other developments.

The event — led by the ICA director Jill Medvedow and gala co-chairs Erica Gervais Pappendick, Ted Pappendick, Charlotte Cramer Wagner, and Herbert S. Wagner III — was in celebration of artist John Akomfrah. Akomfrah’s “Purple,” a six-channel video installation, was co-commissioned by the ICA and will make its US debut in May at the ICA Watershed.
