Frankie Shaw says she shouldn’t have tried to do it all herself.

Following the series finale of Boston-set “SMILF” on Sunday night, Deadline released an interview with Shaw, the Showtime series’ star and showrunner. Shaw told Deadline that the main lessons she took from her time on “SMILF,” which filmed in the Boston area for its second and final season, boil down to two words: “boundaries” and “delegation.”

In December, The Hollywood Reporter published a report stating that numerous people involved with the show’s production had lodged complaints about on-set misconduct, triggering an investigation by series producer ABC Studios.

Shaw, a Brookline native who also served as the show’s main writer and often directed episodes, told Deadline that her time on “SMILF” taught her that “there’s a difference between being a manager and a leader.”

“[I]t’s impossible to be the main creative force, star of the show, director of the show and be the sole manager my first time out of the gate,” she said. “But I will say, the management lessons learned from this are burned into me now.”

Shaw acknowledged that being canceled after two seasons was unexpected, but she attempted to stay optimistic.

“I’m definitely licking my wounds of the pain of this, of course,” Shaw told Deadline. “It was not what I thought was going to happen. But here we are and so, it’s OK. It is. It’s dusting off the boots, getting back on the horse and then there’s like this wide-open world of opportunity.”
