Lauper brings Maine senator onstage and says she’s her ‘hero’

During her show at Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion in Bangor Friday night, Cyndi Lauper brought a surprising guest onstage — none other than US Senator Susan Collins of Maine. “This woman is a hero,” the singer and
LGBTQ rights activist told the cheering crowd. “And she’s my hero. And she’s a Republican.” Lauper, who performed at the 2008 Democratic National Convention and encouraged people to vote for Barack Obama, praised Collins for her work to support homeless LGBT youth, and later shared a picture of the pair, along with Rod Stewart (who’s touring with the “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” singer this summer), on Twitter. Collins also took to social media to show her admiration of Lauper, tweeting, “What a thrill having @cyndilauper in Bangor! I will back you up anytime — on stage or off.”
