9 million

Nearly one out of four American mothers are considered solo moms — women raising at least one child under the age of 18, without the support of a spouse or even a partner in the home, according to the Pew Research Center. Of those roughly nine million mothers, 56 percent are black, 26 percent are Hispanic, 17 percent are white, and nine percent are Asian. In contrast, solo dads comprise just seven percent of American fathers.
