After leaving “Shameless” a few months back, Cameron Monaghan, who plays Ian Gallagher, has announced that he will be returning to the Showtime series next season.
“With any show, it’s a nexus of creativity and business,” he said at the Television Critics Association press tour this week. “I renewed [my contract] a number of times, and it got to the point where I wanted to step away for creative reasons, as well as business, which many other actors had done on the show years earlier.”
I understand, I think, what he means by “creative reasons.” The writers seemed to have lost their minds when it came to Ian, who was turned into some kind of Jesus-like figure for LGBT youth. No word on whether his longtime on-and-off boyfriend Mickey (Noel Fisher) will be back, too.
“I talked to [‘Shameless’ showrunner] John Wells about possible things we could do with the character in the future,” Monaghan said. “We got to a place, both creatively and financially, where I felt comfortable coming back. Much of that had to do with what we were going to do with the story.”
Monaghan’s return may bring some needed stability to the series, as Emmy Rossum prepares to leave at the end of the current season.Matthew Gilbert can be reached at email@example.com. Follow him on Twitter @MatthewGilbert.
