Here’s some great news for fans of David Simon, creator of “The Wire,” “Generation Kill,” “The Corner,” and a few other gems, and for fans of late author Philip Roth.

Simon and Ed Burns, with whom he has worked on a number of projects, are writing and executive producing a six-part adaptation of Roth’s 2004 book “The Plot Against America.” The miniseries will, as with Simon’s other shows, appear on HBO.

The story is an alternate history of America, as seen through the lives of a working-class Jewish family — the Roths — in New Jersey in the 1930s and ’40s. What would have happened if FDR had been defeated by Charles Lindbergh, a Nazi sympathizing aviator and xenophobic populist leaning toward fascism? It’s not going to be pretty, I’m sure of that.
