Jim Petosa, who has served as artistic director of the New Repertory Theatre for six impactful years that saw an increased emphasis on politically engaged work at the Watertown-based venue, will step down at the end of this season.

In addition, next June 30 Petosa will relinquish his position as director of Boston University School of Theatre, a post he has held since 2002.

“It’s time to step aside and allow room for new artists to rise and lead,’’ Petosa said in a prepared statement, adding that he looks forward to “focusing on teaching full-time at BU and directing projects into the future.’’ Petosa has directed numerous productions at New Rep and is slated to direct another, David Meyers’s “We Will Not Be Silent,’’ in October.

Chip Phinney, head of New Rep’s board of directors, praised Petosa in a statement for fostering “consistent artistic excellence and attract[ing] top actors, directors and production staff that our audiences have greatly enjoyed.’’ Phinney said that the search for a new artistic director will be performed by a committee appointed by the board.

At next spring’s annual New Rep gala, Petosa will be presented with the company’s Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award.
