2018 Globe-Horn Book winners named

A picture book about a child’s exploration of colors, a novel involving a slam poet in Harlem, and biography of a young mother who turns tragedy into art have been named this year’s winners of the Globe-Horn Book awards, an annual prize honoring excellence in children’s literature.

Top honors in the picture-book category went to “They Say Blue,” written and illustrated by Jillian Tamaki, followed by “When’s My Birthday?” by Julie Fogliano, illustrated by Christian Robinson, and “A Different Pond” by Bao Phi, illustrated by Thi Bui.

“The Poet X” by Elizabeth Acevedo was the winner in fiction and poetry, with honor awards going to “The Parker Inheritance” by Varian Johnson and “The First Rule of Punk” by Celia C. Pérez.

And in the nonfiction category, the top award went to “Photographic: The Life of Graciela Iturbide” by Isabel Quintero, illustrated by Zeke Peña, followed by “A Hundred Billion Trillion Stars” by Seth Fishman, illustrated by Isabel Greenberg and “The 57 Bus” by Dashka Slater.
