Mark Wahlberg went on the “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Wednesday and delivered some unexpected news. The former local announced his intention to bring back the children’s classic “Captain Kangaroo.”
“I’ve been trying to figure out cool ways to get my kids to be interested in science, technology, engineering,” he told the host. “So I was thinking about what made me interested in school was ‘Captain Kangaroo,’ which ran for 30 years.”
Of course there are many other educational TV shows for children out there, and I’m not sure “Captain Kangaroo” has ever qualified as “cool.” And maybe don’t tell Mark, but the show — which originally ran from 1955 to 1984 and starred Bob Keeshan — was already rebooted, in 1997, with the title “The All New Captain Kangaroo.” Starring John McDonough as the Captain, it lasted only one season.
But hey, why not? Wahlberg told DeGeneres that he’s not sure at what time of day the show will air, but that he hopes to find “a cool STEM scientist as Captain Kangaroo.” I think it’s safe to assume that the new captain will have a more — how to put it — contemporary haircut than Keeshan’s bowl cut.Matthew Gilbert can be reached at email@example.com.
