So remember when CBS decided to fire Erinn Hayes from “Kevin Can Wait” after the first season, so that they could bring in Leah Remini, star Kevin James’s former costar on the popular “King of Queens,” so they could manufacture a giant ratings hit?
Well, the plan failed. Miserably. That “creative overhaul,” which was unnecessary and, in terms of Hayes’s firing and the killing off of her character, unseemly, did not send the series to the top of the Nielsens. In fact, the show had a ratings slide during the second season, and this week the network has decided to cancel it.
What goes around comes around, I guess. I didn’t much like the show even when Hayes was the costar; it was a lazy premise written with an emphasis on gender stereotypes and blue collar cliches. But after Hayes’s character was removed, and then barely mentioned, I full-on despised “Kevin Can Wait.” So hurray, CBS. Good work.Matthew Gilbert can be reached at email@example.com.
